Create a Budget for Your Home Repair Project

You can count on the reality that your home repair or improvement project is going to go over budget. On occasion things go remarkably well and a project is actually completed for less than the projected costs. In most circumstances, however, the project winds up costing more as we typically underestimate the costs. To accurately figure out how much your project is going to cost, it is wise to proceed cautiously and plan for the worst case scenarios, as opposed to just planning for the cost of labor and materials.

Assess Your Home’s Value

Figuring out how much to spend on your improvement project involves finding out how much your home is worth. You need to weigh your home against other homes in your area that have the extra feature. If a pool is what you are considering adding, how much do homes of a similar size with pools in your area go for? Before you can set the budget for a project, you need to know how much value your home will be increasing from the improvement.

Quite a few homeowners make the error of supposing that if a proposed project is going to add $15,000 to the value of their home, then they can borrow and spend $15,000 completing the project. If you begin this way, however, when the project does exceed the budget you will be in a difficult position. Also, you are not promised that the improvement will in fact add to your home’s value what you are estimating it will add.

Budget Reasonably for Home Repairs

What this chiefly means is that you should budget for the worst case scenario. Instead of relying totally on equity or another loan, you should plan other expenses as well: cut down on daily and monthly expenses and put the savings into a home repair fund. This will get you in the custom of sticking to a strict budget. Once you set your repair budget, you have got to abide by the assigned budget for labor and materials. Always check sales or online auctions for materials savings.

At this juncture of the project, you may need to talk to a contractor. It can be a daunting job to purchase the materials you require, and you may not even be aware of some of the items that you will need. Contractors also know ways to reduce costs as well. The best approach to get a great price is to get a quote on materials from one contractor, then have a second contractor give you a quote also. By comparing the two quotes, you can begin to figure out what the realistic costs of the project materials are going to be. Reduce labor costs only if you are entirely certain that you will be able to do that part yourself, you would not want to add costs due to damage that you cause to the home!

Little Home Improvements Create a Difference, Too

Your home does not always need a big remodeling project for there to be constructive changes. When you are trying to decide what you do and do not want to do to your home, consider more than just whether or not the home will go up in value. For example, fresh paint can really make you love your home so much more. Paint will not, on the other hand, add to a home’s value by a large amount. These small projects are worth doing because they can lead to a home that you get more pleasure from, and they are less intimidating than some of the larger projects that homeowners sometimes take on.

I agree – there is no safety equipment used in this video…Safety 1st, which doesn’t happen in this video, especially if you have used any caustic drain cleaner prior to taking the pipes apart…Thick Rubber Gloves, Long Sleeve Shirt, Safety Goggles and/or Face Shield…Be careful, people, this isn’t as easy as it looks or is made out to be in the video…Notice his trap had no water in it, either…

I have a Q wat if the clog is in the wall and the snake some times goes through but the clog is still there and it feels like it’s hard? Any answers please

Hilty makes a type of plastic toggle bolt that will be perfect for you. I don't exactly know what it's called but check their web site out. It's about 6 to8 inches long and you make a 3/8" hole, insert, pull the tabs, and your done. It accepts #8&10 screws. Perfect! If your wall is solid, they will take the weight.

go to auto parts store get a quart of fiberglass reinforced auto body filler it comes with hardener you can ad a little of that and be good to go

But that’s just a technical point. In this particular vid, I see no reason why a 5/16″ snake couldn’t be run right down the strainer, up to 50′ or however far the mainline connection is. I’ve been doing it that way for 17 years with zero callbacks.

Interesting, but be careful that the information provided in this video is relevant to your Jurisdiction. Remember different parts of the world have different sink traps. Check out my channel for great tips and trick in DIY

see, I had HELL of a time just trying to get the snake to bend south after sticking it into the pipe in the wall (I hit the tee, I guess?). I never would’ve been able to do it if I’d gone through the sink.

I wish I could figure it out because it sounds like running water while you do it would be the optimum thing.

If you belong to some specific group you might find one, try grants.gov. They have all of the government grants, with complete instructions if you qualify.

In general there are no grants to improve each others investments. This is your house, you pay to have it the way you want it.

Do you recall voting to be taxed to fix up my kitchen? I do not think so.

But there are grants to modify homes for severally disabled adults in order to allow them to use their homes. If you are part of this group of people your social worker can help you obtain the grants you need.

Sounds like one dangerous roof to walk on! Don't do it! Call a roofing company. They're all capable of full repair. You'll want it stripped so that all rot is exposed and then replaced……. and the new roof lays well. When it comes to shingles, there are different weights that last varying numbers of years……….get the heavy weights! Otherwise, you'll be reroofing in 16 years. Labor is the same for light or heavy.

where can I buy that snake?

The Home Repair and Remodeling Act is a law passed by the Illinois General Assembly which specifically defines requirements of contractors and rights of homeowners who contract for repairs or remodeling to homes. I am enclosing a link to it. Hope this helps.

Thanks alot!!!! I fixed my clogged drain. I almost called a plumber but im glad i watched your video first!!!!

That is what a Clean Out is for…If the stoppage is not in the p-trap, then put it all back together and use the clean out – some are under the sink but many are outside under the kitchen window – Using a Clean Out with a 1/2″ diameter cable will allow you to run water as you clear the stoppage…DO NOT put a hand snake like in the video down a clean out – it can loop up inside the 2″ pipe and then you have real troubles…Be careful, Please…

I tried to find some direct information for you (usually a city has grants for this- not Montgomery though!). The best I can do is to refer you to the Montgomery Area Council on Aging. They don't have a home repair program but they can work with these seniors to help connect them to an agency or nonprofit who can help.

Their website is http://www.macoa.org

Unlikely that a state or local government licenses handyman services, i.e., through examination or otherwise determines a minimal level of competence. Usually the "license" is simply an occupational registration, a device for raising local govt revenues. Contact the local government office which issues occupational and business registration certificates. To determine whether the repairman is licensed as a building contractor (residential or commercial) call the local government building permit/inspection department both to determine whether the repairman's name is known there (if the person is capable of pulling a building permit), as well as to determine if the license number is of a type which is issued by state or local goverenment. For judgments (which do necessarily have anything to do with competence) search official records on the website of the local office (clerk of court) which records such records. To determine the status of a business entity (corporation, LLC, individual d/b/a under a fictituous name) search the website of the state agency which registers such entities (frequently secretary of state, corporations division).

Yes they do have workshops. Whether its what your looking for in particular or not I don't know. You can check their sites for upcoming workshops. Try sites like DIY or HGTV. You can also check your local library for books on the subject.

The ONLY way that 1/4″ cable is going to work there is IF the clog is right at or before the vent stack. In many cases, the stoppage is further down the 2″ drain line that runs under the home, which would require using a cleanout and a 3/8″ – 5/8″ cable with the appropriate head attachment. The small hand snake in the video is better used on lavatory (hand sink) drains and tub drains. The man in the video is not an expert or a plumber, I am sad to write, so please be careful – Thank you.

He is not being lazy it is hard to do not as bad on an suv as it would be a van the best advice I can give you is get a vehicle specific repair manual and follow what it says.Is it worth it? that all depends on a few things such as having the right tools and knowing how to do it if and having the time. If you have the tools know how and time and you can find one cheap that just needs a head gasket get you a book and go for it you can save a bundle by doing it yourself
